New Zealand: Queenstown

From Wanaka we headed to Queenstown. On the way we visited the Historic district of Cromwell, where old buildings have been reconstructed after the dam was built, we also stopped in Arrowtown, an old gold rush town near Queenstown, where we had a walk around and a child mistook me for their mother. Oops!

Our next stop was Coronet Peak, a ski field overlooking Queenstown. We had a great view, and there was even a rainbow visible over the lake. No skiing for us on this trip though!

Our final stop for the day was Glenorchy, a beautiful little town at the end of Lake Wakatipu, in an area used for locations in Lord of the Rings. You could tell why, the area was beautiful with the lake surrounded by snow capped mountains.

The next day we had a ride on the Shotover Jet. It was amazing, the boat spinning in the water, narrowly missing the rocky walls of the canyon. After that we went on the Skyline gondola, getting a lovely view from Ben Lomond. We also had a couple of rides on the luge, which was lots of fun, and had lunch at the restaurant there. Then we did a cruise on Lake Wakatipu. Because it was getting a bit choppy we got upgraded to a bigger boat and on the way out there was only three passengers, so we headed up to the bridge and listened to stories from the skipper.

On our final day in Queenstown we walked around the Botanical Gardens and then went to the Underwater Observatory. That was pretty cool, like a reverse aquarium where we sat inside the tank and watched the fish, ducks and eels from the lake coming close for some food. Then we walked around the Queenstown golf course, which sits on a peninsula on Lake Wakatipu and gives some lovely views of the area. It also has some sculptures along the trail. Finally we did a bit of a walk along the Shotover River.
