Borneo Adventures Part 9 – Sepilok

Monday 13th June 2022

We had an early start to leave Turtle Island today and after a quick breakfast we were back in the boat. It was a little chopper on the water this morning, but still lovely.

After grabbing the rest of our things we headed for Sepilok. Our first stop was the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation centre, and as we entered we were lucky enough to see an orangutan hanging out in the branches above us.

We first headed to the outdoor nursery and saw a couple more orangutans on the way and then we got to watch some of the younger orangutans swinging in their play area. There was one older orangutan in the group who had grabbed the prime position on the platform with the food and it was very cute to see some of the smaller orangutans attempting to sneak away with something to eat.

Then we headed to the feeding platform, and were able to see a group of macaques, a large male orangutan and a female orangutan with her baby feeding. It was an amazing experience!

From there we headed to the Sepilok Sun Bear Conservation Centre, where we saw the sun bears and were able to chat with the centre’s founder, who is doing amazing work protecting these incredible animals.

Then it was time for some lunch and a bit of a test before heading back to the orangutans for their afternoon feeding. It was a bit quieter for the afternoon session and when we arrived a little while before the feeding a few orangutans were hanging around the platform, including the large male. We hadn’t been there long before it started raining. Orangutans don’t really like the rain and it was hilarious to see the large male climb another tree and make a bit of a rain hat to keep the water off before vocalising his displeasure. All the human primates had got under cover in the shelter by the platform, so we were all in the same situation!

Soon enough the rain stopped and we were able to see multiple orangutans coming over to grab some snacks. They have plenty to forage for in the rainforest and so can choose if they want to come to the feeding platform.

Before we left we were able to make another visit to the outdoor nursery and see some more of the younger orangutans playing. Amazing!

For our final stop for the day we visited the Rainforest Discovery Centre where we were able to do a canopy walk as well as climb three view towers and watch some flying squirrels jump from tree to tree as it got dark.

Today we were able to have a bit of a relax by the pool before heading to the airport to fly to Kuala Lumpur, the final stop on our trip.
